The night of Sant Joan, pure Mediterranean magic

The night of Sant Joan is the shortest night of the year. With this summertime welcoming, hundreds of Mediterranean towns celebrate this seasonal change using fire as the main star of the show. This element symbolises the change and beginning of a new cycle, and the towns of the Balearic Islands celebrate them wholeheartedly. One of the enclaves which most stands out for its celebrations and traditions in relation to this event is the Mallorcan capital. Our hotel in the old town of Palma de Mallorca plays witness year after year to an authentic and heartfelt celebration. Our privileged location in the centre of the city means that our guests can be mere metres from all the activities.

The symbolic Parc del Mar tends to be one of the key spots for the evening in the city. Located only ten minutes on foot from our hotel in the old town of Palma de Mallorca, it offers a vast array of activities from the early hours of the afternoon, including workshops for the little ones and traditional dance demonstrations for example. As night arrives, at 11 pm, daylight has completely faded, this means it is time for the correfoc, a traditional parade featuring demons who are carrying firecrackers and pyrotechnics and who encourage locals to run amongst the sparks. Two large dragons named Drac de Na Coca and Drac de Sant Jordi also parade the streets, iconic legends and symbols of the city. All of this comes together in the batucada, where the sound of the drums erupts through the whole city to bring this special evening to a close.
